NewsClaude receives his MBE in Whaddon Tuesday, May 11, 2010Claude Bullingham received his MBE in the heart of the area he served for so many years. The Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Sir Henry Elwes, presented the award at Parklands Community Centre in Wymans Road, Whaddon. Family and friends from the community attended the event. Claude, former chairman of Whaddon Residents' Association and Whaddon, Lynworth and Priors Neighbourhood Project, was included in the New Year's Honours List in 2009, but was prevented from receiving his award due to ill-health following a stroke. Claude's many activities within the local community included organising the annual football tournament for young people in the summer.
Credit Union now at Oakley Resource Centre Tuesday, January 12, 2010The Oakley Resource Centre now has an outlet for the Credit Union. Residents can pay into the scheme at the Centre, as well as at the Cornerstone Centre in Severn Road. The facility is open between 9 am and 3 pm, Monday to Friday, and will hopefully discourage the use of loan sharks. The aim of the scheme is to encourage people to save a little each week so that money will be available for special occasions, like birthdays. There is also an affordable loan system in which members can borrow up to ten times their balance at a low interest rate. The scheme costs £1 to join. For more information call 01242 516960. Job-seekers' workshops Monday, December 21, 2009The Neighbourhood Project now has a range of workshops geared towards helping people back into employment. The courses aim to give people who are unemployed the skills and confidence to apply for jobs. There is also help with job applications, covering letters and putting together CVs. The scheme is proving very popular, as people see the effects of the recession all around them and realise it is important to develop as many skills as possible to make themselves more employable. Anna Reeves, deputy manager at the Project, says that "By providing a friendly supportive environment in which people can come in and use our resources, we are really starting to see some positive results. We provide the tools for people to help themselves." Football Finals 2009 Monday, August 31, 2009The 2009 Five-a-Side Football Tournament culminated on Sunday 30 August with Grand Finals Day in Clyde Crescent and the presentation of awards. Russell Milton, former Cheltenham Town player, presented the trophies. Although the skies were grey throughout the day, the threatened rain held off. John Hunt and all the volunteers did a splendid job throughout the summer holidays organising the Tournament. Thanks are due to Cheltenham Borough Council and all sponsors and supporters who contributed towards the success of the event. At the end of the afternoon a special award was presented by the Revd. Robert Pestell, Chair of Oakley Regeneration Partnership, to Claude Bullingham for his service to the community over many years. Claude was responsible for establishing the annual summer Football Tournament ten years ago. (For pictures of the event see 'Photos' page.)
WLPNP AGM on 21 October Wednesday, July 22, 2009The 2009 Annual General Meeting of Whaddon, Lynworth and Priors Neighbourhood Project will take place on Wednesday 21 October at 6.30 p.m. in the Oakley Resource Centre in Clyde Crescent. Plea for Health Centre for vacated school site Saturday, July 18, 2009Oakley Regeneration Partnership has called for the Whaddon School site to be converted into a community Health Centre when it is vacated in time for the new Oakwood School to open in September 2011 on the former Lynworth School site. The proposal was made at a recent meeting of the Social and Community Overview and Scrutiny Committee of Cheltenham Borough Council. This is my no means the first time such a request has been made. It must be hoped that the powers-that-be are more receptive now to the idea of improved health facilities for the area than they were when the Secretary of State for Health at the time and the Chief Executive of the PCT were approached back in early 2007 (see the first entry on this News site). The only suggestion at that time from the health authority was an improved bus service to the St. Paul's Medical Centre, which eventually floundered on 'uneconomic' grounds. Junior Football Tournament 2009 Friday, July 17, 2009The evening of Wednesday 22 July sees the start of the tenth Whaddon five-a-side Junior Football Tournament held annually in Clyde Crescent. This year John Hunt will be running the event which attracts large numbers of 8-16 year-olds from all over the town. Sadly, Claude Bullingham, who has organised the Tournament since it started, had a stroke earlier this year and has had to hand the baton over to John who has ably assisted him over the years. The good news is that Claude is now back home and will be able to keep an eye on the progress of this year's Tournament. The Grand Final will be held on Sunday 30 August. John Hunt can be contacted on 01242 583856 for more information about the Tournament. Congratulations! Wednesday, June 17, 2009Congratulations to the Neighbourhood Project's 'team' (Kevin Potts, Anna Reeves, Sue Pestell and Andrew Pestell) on successfully completing the Cheltenham Circular Walk. They have raised £450 for the Project. Hot night out at Chilli Hut Tuesday, June 02, 2009The new Mayor of Cheltenham, Cllr Lloyd Surgenor, recently joined more than 70 staff and supporters of the Neighbourhood Project and representatives of Whaddon Youth Club at the Chilli Hut restaurant in Albion Street. Delicious Indian dishes were enjoyed by all and the event raised £500 towards the work of the Project. Thanks to the management of the Chilli Hut for masterminding this very successful event. Oakley Learning For Life Trust loses bid to run school Thursday, April 09, 2009In spite of much local support for Oakley Learning For Life Trust's bid to run the new primary school in Oakley, Gloucestershire County Council has chosen the Child and Family Learning Partnership (a partnership between Gardners Lane Primary School and the University of Gloucestershire) to run the school. The community is disappointed that the new school is to be run from outside the area, but there is no appeal against the County Council's decision. This seems to be yet another example of the voice of the local people being ignored and overruled, very reminiscent of the way in which local feelings about health care facilities in the area have also been ignored over many years. Project bids for new school in Oakley Friday, February 20, 2009Whaddon, Lynworth and Priors Neighbourhood Project is the lead partner in a bid to establish a new primary school for the Oakley area of Cheltenham. The new school will replace the existing Whaddon and Lynworth Primary Schools, initially occupying their accommodation until a new building is completed on the Lynworth site for September 2011.The proposal has been made by The Oakley Learning For Life Trust, a partnership between the Neighbourhood Project and Gloucestershire College. Full details of the proposal and the other proposals submitted can be found on the Gloucestershire County Council website (see Links) The main thrust of The Oakley Learning For Life bid is the advancement of high standards of education in the Oakley area, providing additional services and family support through the new school and wider community. This will expand on the Neighbourhood Project's theme of Lifelong Learning 'from cradle to grave', one of the Project's main areas of activity since its early days. There is a six-week representation period during which the County Council invites comments on the proposals. The closing date for comments is 3 April. There is a public meeting on Wednesday 4 March at Pittville School, Albert Road, Cheltenham, from 6 - 8 pm, when there will an opportunity to hear more about each proposal and to ask questions. A well-deserved New Year's Honour Wednesday, December 31, 2008Congratulations to Claude Bullingham, Chair of Whaddon, Lynworth & Priors Neighbourhood Project, who has been awarded the MBE in the New Year's Honours List for voluntary services to the local community. Claude has given committed service over many years to the Whaddon community and the surrounding area. Many of those years have been difficult and challenging, but Claude has always remained tenacious in his determination to improve not only the facilities available for everyone in the area, but also to improve the way the rest of Cheltenham regards his part of town. Well done, Claude. A truly well-deserved recognition for all your unpaid hard work for the community.Roll on the Spring! Saturday, November 01, 2008Young and old Neighbourhood Project volunteers joined forces on a sunny morning in Clyde Crescent Park to plant over 2000 daffodil bulbs, kindly donated by Cheltenham in Bloom (see Photos page). Sunday, August 24, 2008A big 'thank you' to Claude Bullingham, ably assisted once again by John Hunt and other volunteer helpers, for another very successful Summer Football Tournament. This is the ninth year of the Tournament and Claude summed it up saying that 2008 had 'gone exceptionally well, in spite of the weather', with 19 teams taking part - that's 133 young girls and boys. At Finals Day everyone enjoyed a really great atmosphere, with a barbecue, raffle, tombola, coconut-shy, bouncy castle, caterpillar-run, shadow-boxing and bungee-run as well as the culmination of the football competition.(For pictures of the event see 'Photos' page.) Boost for Oakley lifelong learning Monday, April 14, 2008UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) and GHA (Gloucestershire Housing Association) have both generously given their financial support towards a lifelong learning initiative covering the Oakley area of Cheltenham. Everyone was upbeat at the Resource Centre site meeting that morning. The building work would be finished by the end of October. Plastering would start in two weeks' time. Small guided tours of the building site could begin for interested parties in mid-August. No one could have foreseen what the next 48 hours would bring. On Friday 20 July torrential unmitigating rain led to catastrophic flooding in many parts of Gloucestershire, including Cheltenham. Muddy water rushed through streets and houses in the town, including many parts of Oakley, turning familiar local roads into swirling rivers. Some properties were flooded for the second time in just a few weeks. Gloucestershire suddenly found itself at the centre of the national news, as the situation in the county rapidly descended into a dire emergency with mains electricity and water supplies threatened. Thanks to a superb effort by the armed forces, emergency services and engineers, the electricity substation was saved, but the water supply in the county failed. With the threat of poor weather, the venue was changed from Clyde Crescent to the Youth Centre. In the event not a drop of rain fell, but there was a positively continental atmosphere in Dart Road as people basked in the sunshine, sitting round tables enjoying refreshments and ice cream. There was also a real holiday mood inside the Youth Centre with games, displays, face-painting and many other entertainments. Everyone had a really good time. Congratulations to Cheltenham Borough Homes for organising the event. Fortunately the dark clouds did not dampen spirits, and the painting was very ably led by artist Kevin Parker with Paul McKee and Clara Hambling from Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum and art students from the University of Gloucestershire. The theme of the work is 'Carnival' and everyone is delighted with the colourful and cheerful mural brightening up the park. (See 'Photos' page)Painting of Clyde Crescent hoardings Friday, May 18, 2007Plans are gathering pace for the painting of the hoardings around the new Resource Centre site in Clyde Crescent between 29 and 31 May, organised by the Art Gallery and Museum and jointly sponsored by Cheltenham Borough Homes and Cheltenham Borough Council.
